Infantry rest behind an Sd.Kfz.251 personnel carrier. In Stalingrad the Sd.Kfz.251 halftrack was used to carry men into the city. The vehicle possessed rear doors and the crew compartment was left open so that the soldiers could hastily disembark over the sides and take up primary positions in order to try and mop up a bewildered enemy. However, quite often the halftrack was prone to attack by both small arms and machine gun fire. Bottles of Molotov cocktails too were thrown into the open compartment setting fire to the soldiers inside.
